This disc is loaded with glitches. For one thing, the Dolby TrueHD track pops in and out in more than a dozen random places in the film.
Also, the opening animation sequence switches from 16:9 to 4:3, and then back again as soon as Amy Adams's character falls through the manhole.

Sounds8292,
I saw the film in a theater as well as on standard-def DVD, and I can assure you that the aspect ratios are correct. The opening animation sequence is intentionally framed differently from the live-action part of the film.
Now, perhaps you could explain further about the TrueHD track on the Blu-ray edition popping "in and out in more than a dozen random places in the film." Do mean there are actual dropouts in the sound, momentary lapses of sound altogether? Or does the THD audio revert to regular Dolby Digital 5.1 on occasion? Jim didn't note any such audio glitches in his review. Does your disc have anything on it (lint, scratch) that might cause the audio to pop in and out?
John

Sounds8292,
The animation sequencing is as I said in my review. The sound problems are another matter, though, and I'd be annoyed if what you described happened to me. But I had no glitches on my disc and my player (I played this back on a Sony BD-P1400). You made me curious, though, and I started checking around at other sites to see if anyone else may have experienced problems, and I didn't run across anyone who did. Peter Bracke at High-Def Digest gave it four-and-a-half out of five stars for audio and video, which is pretty much what I gave it. So all I can tell you is that we haven't run into this problem. If I were you I'd call the Disney people and tell them about it. I haven't dealt with them on bad discs, but some of our readers who HAVE called for assistance have found them to be very accommodating.
Good luck!

Actually, Sounds8292,
I just realized what you were talking about. What threw me is that you said the animation BEGINS with the widescreen, then goes 4:3 and back again, which it does not. But you're absolutely right that the aspect ratio changes at some point later in the film to where the animated land is the same 2.35:1 as the live-action. I actually thought about mentioning it as an inconsistency, but realized that it would have been too hard on the eyes of theater-goers had they shifted back to the narrower frame for such a brief moment, and then back again.

The windowboxing was intentional, and part of the director's way of contrasting the two worlds. I didn't experience the audio dropouts using the PS3 (TrueHD internal decoding to L-PCM selected).

Thanks Jamesplath,
I downloaded the update 3.6 for the Sony BDP-S500 and that fixed the audio drop out problem(momentary moments where there would be no sound for a second, and then the sound would return) with the Dolby TrueHD track. As for the pillarboxing, if that's how it's supposed to be, than so be it, I'm happy.
