the heavy DNR processing makes this video look awful.

So a lot of reviewers have said. I don't see it. Then again, I haven't been blessed with videophile superpowers. I'm just an average movie lover, and I see a stylized look that's intentional, used to support the gritty, surreal world that Scorsese created.

Dpacino, you're entitled to your opinion, but please don't make ignorant comments charging that people have taken payola, just because they happen to say something favorable about a film. As a journalist I resent that, and remarks like that have no place on any movie site. I know full well that other reviewers slammed the video quality. Would you prefer that I wrote what other reviewers saw, or that I wrote my reviews based on what everybody else thinks? The whole idea of a review is that it's an individual's opinion, and it reflects the way an individual sees a film. Admittedly, that can vary, depending on a person's mood or how tired he or she happens to be. But I personally think that just as ten reviewers can watch a film and see ten different films, the same thing can hold true for gauging the video/audio quality. Some people are half-empty folks and seem to spot mostly the negatives some are half-full. Rottentomatoes is based on the whole idea that critics don't think alike, and if you start cruising and comparing reviews you'll see that while some patterns emerge, opinions are still widely varied, no matter what the film . . . and no matter whether we're talking video quality or film quality.

I'd like to echo what Jim just wrote. How anyone perceives something differs depending on what one is looking for. If you are the kind of person who has a 100" screen and watches from five feet away, pausing the movie every two minutes to examine the picture, you're going to find fault in any film.
I reviewed the standard-def DVD several years ago and found the video pretty good, despite what some other critics said at the time. I found some haloing, edge enhancement, but I didn't find it severe enough to interfer with my enjoyment of the movie. There were also moments of softness and some moire effects, but, again, nothing that I hadn't seen in literally a thousand other films.
