SONY has responded to the earlier comment by a Samsung exec concerning how long the Blu-ray high-def format "will last". Sony senior VP of corporate communications Rick Clancy counters that Blu-ray will eventually live harmoniously with digital downloads, and predicts that BD has "perhaps a decade" of growth to come.

A controversial statement came from Samsung in a recent interview with Pocket-Lint Magazine.

While Sony believes that their Playstation 3 and Blu-ray strategy will have at least a ten year lifespan Samsung apparently doesn't share their optimism.

"I think it (Blu-ray) has 5 years left, I certainly wouldn't give it 10", Andy Griffiths, director of consumer electronics at Samsung UK told Pocket-lint in an interview.

However, he still believes in the format and said that 2008 would be huge for the format.

5 yrs??? Yeah right. If DVD is any indication I would say that 10 yrs is a more accurate prediction for Blu Ray's lifespan. This assumes of course that it is widely adopted by the masses...if it isn't than even 5 yrs may be pushing it.

If they don't do something about the high cost of Blu ray it won't even last 5 years. Players are way to expensive as or the movies. I have 40 HD DVD and 40 Blu ray movies but I find my self going back to DVD more and more as it is costing to much. My Toshiba HD DVD player upconverts DVD to almost as good as the HD Disc/DVD movies. Also some HD movies just don't look like movies, more like games. Transformers is one it looks like the game more than a movie.

If Samsung actually feels this way then why didn't they back HD-DVD exclusively from the start? Five years seems more like the time it will actually take off.

I think there will always be a disc type of technology, it's just cost beneficial at the moment (compared to flash technology), and there are people that like something "tangible". The beauty is once standards are finalized and defined, they are incorporated over time. CD can be read on most DVD players, DVD can be read on most BD players. It's just going to take time (just like DVD) for BD to become ubiquitous. As a former HD-DVD purchaser myself, I am so glad the standards war is finally over, and we can just move on. Make no doubt, if you want the absolute best quality video on disc right now, it's on BD "today". You can expect some BD players near or break 200 mark, and there are many deals for BD discs from $10-$20 on Amazon, Craigslist, and E-bay to be found. I look forward to getting my first BD player (maybe a Sony BDP-S350 or 2nd gen Funai clone) and start enjoying some of these nice BD movies coming out.

Blu Ray players can be found under $200 now - the magic number all of the Blu haters and whiners said was necessary for the format to explode. It's here now. Now shut the hell up! I paid under $300 for my player several months ago, and never pay more than $20 a disc. It's time to drop the whole it's-too-expensive whining, and accept that the format exists, and is growing, and at a rate comparable to the early years of DVD. Some people may never want it, but too expensive? Please. That argument doesn't hold water any more.
