THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL (1951)

DVDTOWN has just been told that in addition to the forthcoming 2-disc deluxe Special Edition DVD arriving Dec 2, Fox Home Entertainment will also release a deluxe, single-disc Blu-ray High-Def edition (with improved HD audio soundtracks), on the same date (SRP $34.99).

While the bonus features are similar to that of the DVD (with a few additional extras), it's worth noting that the BD will contain two 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks, one that features the original film's soundtrack remixed and remastered in 5.1, as well as an "Isolated Score" 5.1 DTS-HD MA soundtrack!

We'd like to commend Fox in their effort to satisfy the many fans of this movie, giving the deluxe treatment to a classic catalog title (reminiscent of Warner on some of their older films).

Blu-ray edition Bonus Features:
-Audio Commentary by director Robert Wise and Nicolas Meyer
-Audio Commentary by film & music historians John Morgan, Steven Smith, William Stromberg & Nick Redman
-Isolated Score Track in DTS-HD MA 5.1
-The Making of The Day The Earth Stood Still
-Decoding "Klaatu, Barada, Nikto" (Science Fiction as Metaphor)
-A Brief History of Flying Saucers
-Edmund North: The Man Who Made The Earth Stand Still
-The Astounding Harry Bates
-Farewell to the Master: an Audio Presentation of the original short story
-1951 Fox Movietone News (featuring the film's premiere)
-Restoration Comparison
-Original Theatrical Trailer
-Shooting Script
-Construction Blue Prints for the ship
-US & UK Pressbooks
-Posters, Lobby Cards, Spaceship Model and Gort
-Behind-the-Scenes
-Blu-ray Disc Promo trailer
-BD-J Interactive Feature
-TBD D-Box (capable)
-BD-Live Portal

Synopsis:
The all-time classic sci-fi masterpiece, The Day the Earth Stood Still is coming back in a Special Edition Blu-ray, and 2-disc deluxe DVD, featuring a new master and all new documentaries and other VAM. Considered one of the great sci-fi movies of all time, Robert Wise's movie was a metaphor for McCarthyism in America as well as a plea for peace in the atomic age.

A spaceship lands in Washington, D.C., capturing the attention of the world. But the alien emissary (Michael Rennie) it brings refuses to reveal his mission to any single government, leaving the military, the politicians, and millions of ordinary people to wait in fear. Soon their distrust turns to calls for violence. But one young woman and her son (Patricia Neal, Billy Gray) befriend him... and soon realize that they may be all that stands between the human race and total destruction.

Sure it will. With none of the extras from the Fox Studio Classics disc or this 2 disc set. With a price of $39.99.

And they'll be surprised when no one buys a classic film.

Jason, can I run Fox, please?

Single layer Blu-Ray though. They probably had limitations on the re-mastering side. Either that or FOX is pulling one of their were are too cheap to spend money on a real transfer... Not to pick on FOX, but the last few so called "Blockbusters" they have released have been single layer DVD's and single layer Blu-Ray's. Do they have any clue how many of these will sell? Oh well, it better than not having it at all...

Reaggie...

I'm reading single disc BD, not single layer. Maybe it's a BD 50 and not a BD 25? Or am I completely blind this morning?

Jason, shuddering over the remake

Oops, I think your right! I'm blind first thing in the morning. Generally FOX is usually pretty cheap when it comes to remastered disks.
